Brief History of Pet

Bei Bei was born in China on September 1, 2016. My neighbor sent me a photo of Bei Bei about 6 months after my beautiful golden, Maggie, passed away. I was still working through the grief process and wasn’t sure I was ready to adopt again. However, the story behind the photo of Bei Bei was not to be ignored. It was about the dog meat industry in China. After reading about this horrible ‘business,’ I had to apply for adoption. That was in March 2019, a year before the covid pandemic hit the USA.

After submitting my application to adopt Bei Bei, I was promptly denied due to not having a fenced yard. I contacted the director of the rescue and laid out my reasons why I should be granted the adoption. After that discussion, the director contacted my Vet then called me back and approved the adoption.

When I got Bei Bei home, I noticed his ears were filled with what looked like coffee grounds; but after his Vet visit the next day, it turned out to be ear mites and his chest hair was all matted. He needed to be groomed asap.
He looks like an entirely different dog today.

Why VSMR?

Bei Bei has hip dysplasia and elbow arthritis. He was diagnosed when he was only 4 years old. He is now 8. Over the years, we’ve been treating him with anti-inflammatories, glucosamine supplements, herbs, acupuncture, laser, Adequan, chiropractic treatments and Librela. Some of these treatments would help temporarily but it was a challenge because Bei Bei also suffers from irritable bowel so many of the meds and herbs would make him sick. We needed to have a treatment that was more natural. After numerous attempts to get Bei Bei feeling good again, nothing was really working. My Vet recommended doing some physical therapy at VSMRHG. We have been going there now for a few months and I have seen improvement with his mobility. The very first day we were there I was impressed by the staff’s knowledge and expertise. They had the tools necessary to examine Bei Bei and they put together a plan to achieve our goal and deliver results. They even taught me a few things to help Bei Bei at home. We still have a way to go, but I feel so encouraged now that we found someone who can help Bei Bei without giving him a lot of medications.

Favorite Motivator

Bei Bei has a sensitive tummy but is more that willing to work for pets and hugs!

“Bei Bei is the perfect patient and is always so happy when he comes in. He always brings his Mr. Bill stuffie to cuddle with during massage. Everyone loves when Bei Bei comes in to visit!”
Kat Holich

Bei Bei came to us with osteoarthritis that was limiting his mobility.  We put him in a program that included walking in the underwater treadmill, shockwave therapy on the affected joints and manual therapy.  Bei Bei always has his Mr. Bill plush toy and is one of the sweetest boys on the planet.  He is now moving better and we hope to keep him active and happy in his senior years.

How VSMR has helped

VSMRHG’s treatments have not only helped Bei Bei with his mobility but it’s helped him to feel happy again. I can’t thank the staff enough for everything that they do to give Bei Bei the quality of life that he deserves. It’s easy to see that everyone who works there loves what they do and loves their patients. As soon as we walk in the door, the office staff will come out to welcome Bei Bei, which makes him so happy. The shockwave treatments along with massage have been helping give him some relief from his joint pain. Everyone we’ve worked with at VSMRHG has been so knowledgeable and are always ready to help.

Addition Information:

Bei Bei’s journey began on a Thursday in March 2019 in China. He was packed into a very small dog crate and traveled alongside ten other Goldens. All of them were coming here to be adopted. They started out by cargo van on their way to the airport with armed guards that protected them and their rescuers from bandits who would steal the dogs. The dog meat trade is very lucrative in Asia. They took two planes to arrive here in Chicago…to safety. It was a treacherous 3 day journey for them. I was a wreck hoping and praying they would arrive here safely. When I received word that their plane landed and they were finally here, I just started crying.

My neighbors drove me to pick up Bei Bei at the shelter in Indiana just two days after they arrived here. I remember seeing Bei for the first time. He was so excited and happy. We were all crying…it was such an emotional meeting. All the goldens that came with him from China were there, waiting for their forever homes. I set his red leash down while I introduced myself to him and gave him his first toy. He was enjoying everyone’s attention. Before I knew it, he had the leash in his mouth and was walking around with it, as if he was ready to go home. To this day, 5+ years later, he will still carry that red leash in his mouth.

Bei Bei has volunteered at several fundraising Meet & Greet events for As Good as Gold Golden Retriever Rescue of Illinois for the last 5 years. The events are created to introduce and educate people on the AGaG Organization and also to fundraise. He absolutely loves doing these events. When he’s around other goldens, he just beams with happiness.

Bei Bei loves attention and loves his deck. He calls out to anyone who is passing the house when he is outside. Many neighbors will stop to say hello to Bei Bei. Several of them have become regulars. He has made a lot of friends, both humans and dogs when sitting out on the deck.

Bei Bei takes along Mr. Bill whenever we go to the Vet or any place special.  As soon as I bring out Mr. Bill, he knows he’s going in the car visiting. When we go into town, everyone who sees him carrying Mr. Bill laughs and wants to pet him. It makes me feel good to know how much joy he brings to everyone he meets. He absolutely loves being around people.
